Medina Vision and Laser Centre offers patients the option to treat nearsightedness without surgery or permanent change to the eye. Corneal Reshaping Therapy (CRT) is a process of gently reshaping the cornea during sleep using a specialized highly oxygen-permeable therapeutic lens device. A patient wears the device while asleep and removes the lens device upon awakening. She then is able to go through the day without any need for distance glasses or contact lenses.
CRT is a new technology based on an older procedure called Orthokeratology. In orthokeratology, a succession of progressively flatter-shaped gas permeable contact lenses were used over several months to flatten the cornea. This procedure required many office visits, a lot of contact lens materials, and patience by both the doctor and the patient. There were also limitations as to how much prescription could be corrected in this way. Because the lenses were not safe for overnight wear, they had to be worn while awake.
What makes CRT more appealing is that the lens devices are highly oxygen permeable and have been approved by the FDA for overnight wear. The unique lens design, material, and fitting allow the optometrist to flatten up to -5.00 diopters of nearsightedness in days as opposed to months. Typically patients experience stable, clear, optimal vision in 7 to 14 days. Most of the improvement occurs in the first 3 to 5 days, but this varies depending on the patient's age, prescription, and hours of sleep per night. During this transition period, some patients opt to wear temporary soft contact lenses or wear their CRT device during the day to correct any blur.
CRT is not a permament procedure, and removal of the lens device will allow the cornea to return to its baseline shape in about 72 hours. The procedure involves few risks, and those risks are no different than those associated with conventional contact lens wear. The FDA observed no adverse effects in patients enrolled in their clinical study. Caring for the lens devices is similar to caring for a gas permeable lcontact ens. They need to be disinfected every morning after wear, and the devices will typically last a year or more with proper care and handling.
If you are interested in knowing whether you would be a good candidate for CRT, please contact our office. We would be happy to evaluate your ocular health and make a recommendation based on your prescription, corneal shape, and overall eye health.
